Ms. Mattuck is an environmental engineer specializing in human health risk assessments, blood lead modeling, geochemical modeling, contaminant fate and transport evaluations for hazardous waste sites, as well as litigation support for toxic tort, cost allocation, cost recovery, and product liability cases.  At Gradient, her responsibilities include conducting and writing human health risk assessments, exposure modeling using analytical exposure models, blood lead modeling, statistical programming, and assisting in the preparation of expert reports.  In previous consulting positions, she planned and implemented remedial investigations at hazardous waste sites, prepared feasibility studies and environmental permits, and conducted environmental due diligence assessments.

Representative Projects

Risk Assessment Near Copper Smelter, New Mexico: For the New Mexico Environment Department, performed a multipathway human health risk assessment to evaluate exposure to metals present in various media due to past smelter emissions and windblown dust from tailings ponds. Attended public meetings with community group.

Lead Exposure in Imported Toys: Evaluated potential lead exposures to children from contact with imported toys with lead-based paint exceeding US CPSC limits. Performed blood lead modeling to evaluate the effect on blood lead levels from ingestion of lead in the surface coating. Evaluated dermal contact using the results of wipe tests and developed analysis methods to evaluate lead leaching into saliva under a mouthing scenario.

Regulatory Comment, Major Oil Company: Prepared a report analyzing the significance of historic lead emissions from gasoline and the degree to which historic leaded gas emissions in soil contribute to current childhood lead poisoning in California. Examined appropriateness of the current fee structure for the CA Childhood Lead Poisoning Prevention Program.

Risk Assessment Near Primary Lead Smelter: Performed risk assessments for areas around a primary lead smelter in Missouri. Evaluated human health risks from exposure to lead ore concentrate on haul roads, and community risks to children and adults from exposure to lead as well as other heavy metals in residential soils and slag pile. Performed blood lead modeling and developed soil lead cleanup levels.

Paint Manufacturer, Kansas: Conducted human health risk assessments for a paint manufacturing plant. Evaluated exposures of workers to on-site soils and off-site residential exposures to arsenic, cadmium, and lead in surface soil. Performed blood lead modeling and developed soil lead cleanup levels.
