Ms. Zhang is a senior toxicologist specializing in managing, conducting, and implementing chemical-specific toxicological hazard evaluation and registration of new chemicals for compliant Safety Data Sheets.  She applies a critical eye in evaluating and identifying hazards of chemicals according to criteria set by several regulatory bodies: United States, Canada, New Zealand, Australia, European Commission, Brazil, and United Nations. Ms. Zhang also played a vital role in spearheading the application of bridging principles in the determination of product-level hazard classifications as well as implementing jurisdictional-specific SDS disclosure requirements. Prior to Gradient, she worked at the Fox Chase Cancer Center designing and conducting translational bench research with promising applications to human bladder cancer treatment. Ms. Zhang also spent time at the United Nations Convention of Long-range Transboundary Air Pollution evaluating country-specific air quality violations, in addition to developing project proposal to implement legislations aimed at emission reduction for the country of Azerbaijan.

Representative Projects

Toxicological Hazard Evaluation:  Managed a large team of human health/ecological toxicologists and chemists to provide critical toxicological hazard evaluations of thousands of chemicals for compliant SDS in the European Union, United States, New Zealand, Australia, Ecuador, Brazil, and Canada.  Managed the implementation of chemical-specific assessments for product-level SDS compliance for multiple jurisdictions.  Spearheaded the application of bridging principles in the determination of product-level hazard classifications, advising storage, disposal, release requirements, and analyzing jurisdictional-specific SDS disclosure requirements.

Health and Environment Assessment:  Prepared human health and environmental assessments for new chemical notification under New Zealand’s Hazardous Substances and New Organism (HSNO) and Australia’s National Industrial Chemical Notification and Assessment Scheme (NICNAS), and United States' Toxic Substances Control Act (TSCA).

Hazard Assessment:  Managedhazard determinations on over 2000 chemicals per the Globally Harmonized System of Classification and Labeling (GHS). Identified appropriate read-across or surrogates in the absence of toxicological data.

Exposure Assessment:  Evaluated and compared site-specific exposure to background exposure of heavy metals (arsenic, beryllium, cadmium, chromium, lead, mercury, nickel, and vanadium) in soil.  Reviewed and summarized metal-specific primary and secondary literature.  Evaluated potential teratogenic effects of individual metals and mixtures of metals. 

Toxic Tort Data Review:  Critiqued epidemiological data and methodology in a hexavalent chromium toxic tort case.  Drafted questions and comments for opposing expert witness depositions.  Constructed data tables and aided in the development of expert report.

Safety Data Sheet and Label: Evaluated Safety Data Sheet (SDS) Requirements and provided SDSs and labels for natural food colorant products according to Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) 2012 Standard. Summarized requirements for a Hazard Communication Plan and Worker Training program under OSHA for worker health and safety training.

GreenScreen® Assessments: Evaluated alternative substances to copper-based antifouling paint for boats using the GreenScreen® for Safer Chemicals framework.
