Ms. Lewis is a Principal with expertise in toxicology and risk assessment.  She has led and contributed to a variety of projects, including product safety evaluations, regulatory comment, green chemistry assessments, and technical support for the utility and mining industry.  She also has particular expertise in risk assessment on arsenic and coal combustion product regulatory issues.  In this capacity, Ms. Lewis has both published and presented extensively on the carcinogenic risks of arsenic and provided direct input to US EPA on arsenic regulatory issues.  Ms. Lewis also has expertise in developing quantitative human health risk criteria for chemicals with limited toxicity data.  Before joining Gradient, Ms. Lewis earned her M.S. at Cornell University; her thesis project investigated the molecular and cellular responses to arsenic exposure during early animal development.

Representative Projects

Recommended Best Practices for Assessing Risks in Baby Products:  Partnered with a global safety certification company to develop recommended best practices for assessing chemical hazards and risks associated with personal care products, focusing on those used in infant care.

Complete Assessment of Chemical Portfolio for SDS Updates:  Conducted GHS-based hazard assessments for a chemical portfolio consisting of more than 2000 chemicals used in the formulation of tens of thousands of products.  The hazard assessments were used to understand product level hazard and update US and international Safety Data Sheets (SDSs) to meet GHS compliance requirements.

Development of SDS Template for North American Fabricators:  Led project developing a comprehensive SDS that could be used by association members to convey substance-specific toxicity and risk information for a general public audience.

Ongoing Toxicology Support for Hazard Assessment of New Chemicals:  Provide ongoing toxicology support for a company that markets printer equipment and ink. This includes updating the company’s internal standard on the use of hazardous chemicals and ensure that this standard is met accross markets.

Inhalation Criteria Development:  Developed a series of health-based inhalation criteria (HBIC) for several different organic compounds present in consumer products. In some cases, derivation of the HBIC required surrogate selection, route-to-route extrapolation, and animal-to-human pharmacokinetic adjustments.

Toxicology and Regulatory Assessment of Anti-microbial Substances:  Performed a comprehensive review of the regulatory landscape, hazard, available human health toxicity and ecotoxicity data, and authoritative risk assessments of several anti-microbial substances that are banned or under consideration for banning by the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) in personal care products.
