Senior Toxicologist

VCard Bio

Dr. Pacheco Shubin is experienced in reproductive and developmental toxicology, pathobiology, and risk analysis/risk communication.  Before joining Gradient, Dr. Pacheco Shubin conducted research aimed at identifying sperm biomarkers of testicular injury and dysfunction in both humans and animal models. She also completed an applied research project on systematic review, meta-analysis, and benchmark dose modeling of the current literature investigating low level lead exposure and adverse maternal and child health effects. Dr. Pacheco Shubin's primary responsibilities at Gradient include evaluating and interpreting toxicology data for hazard and human health risk assessment, benchmark dose modeling, and assisting clients with their product safety and product stewardship needs. Dr. Pacheco Shubin has authored or co-authored articles and book chapters in the areas of reproductive toxicology and risk assessment.

Representative Projects

Chemical Compliance Database Development: Assisted a consumer products company in compiling a list of chemicals that would trigger reporting requirements under a new State regulation. Developed a comprehensive, searchable database for client to query regulatory status of chemicals in its products.

Chemical Portfolio Analysis: Assisted a consumer products company with evaluating its product line for the presence of California Proposition 65 chemicals.  Prioritized list of chemicals. Identified key SKUs for confirmatory chemical testing by cross referencing this list with database developed for the client. Analyses served to identify a set of products and analytes that were sent for confirmatory testing to be sure Prop65 chemicals were present below Safe Harbor values.

Proposition 65 Support: Reviewed the Prop65 list for chemicals that could potentially be present in the consumer product manufacturer's products and proposed a product prioritization approach, based on the chemical(s) expected to be present and the potential for exposure.

Lead Modeling and Assessment for Proposition 65 Support: Evaluated the significance of lead present in a variety of consumer products for comparison with Prop65 proposed lead limits. Performed lead modeling using the Leggett plus model to quantify the overall impact on blood lead and bone lead concentrations of intermittent intake of lead in the product as compared to the impact of a daily intake of lead at the proposed Prop65 limits.

Chemical Risk Assessment: Conducted technical analyses on the US EPA TSCA Work Plan Chemical Risk Assessment Peer Review Draft: 1-Bromopropane. Conducted benchmark dose (BMD) analyses of the National Toxicology Program (NTP) cancer incidence data for skin tumors in male rats using the US EPA BMD software. Evaluated whether US EPA's study and critical effect selection for the reproductive and developmental toxicity of l-bromopropane were appropriate, which were used in comments submitted to the US EPA regarding the Draft Document.

Developmental and Reproductive Toxicity (DART) Evaluation: Provide regular evaluations to determine whether chemical exposures that pregnant employees might encounter in the workplace could be of concern for developmental and reproductive toxicity (DART).
