The number of women who work during pregnancy is dramatically higher than in the past. Employees are often concerned about the potential risks posed by workplace chemical exposures to the developing fetus and infant. Male and female workers who intend to conceive may also be concerned about the effects of workplace chemical exposures on their reproductive health. This article explores important aspects of pregnancy in the workplace and discusses several challenges industrial hygienists may face in assessing the appropriateness of an occupational exposure limit (OEL) for workers who are pregnant or intend to conceive. The article concludes with recommendations of useful resources that are available to address this concern.
